Andy Kirk and His Clouds of Joy

Probably including:  Harry Lawson, Jack Dozier, Fats Navarro, Howard McGhee (tp); Ted Donnelly, unidentified (tb); John Harrington (cl, as, ts); Ben Smith (as); J. D. King, Jimmy Forrest (ts); Johnny Young (p); Booker Collins (b); Ben Thigpen (dr); June Richmond (voc); Andy Kirk (dir).

Unidentified Ballroom, Cincinnati, OH.

Howard McGhee interviewed by Phil Schaap. Radio WKCR 1977-78: McGhee tells that BarnetÕs band had a vacation and that McGhee temporarily rejoined Kirk. This happened in a ballroom in Cincinnati, and Fats Navarro was in the band. He also tells that afterwards the band had an engagement at the Regal in Chicago, and that Navarro got a new mouthpiece from Charlie Allen there. We have not been able to verify Kirk engagements in Cincinnati or Regal around this time, but the band could have had a one-nighter in Chicago before going to Washington, PA. Anyway, McGhee has told the mouthpiece anecdote on several occasions maybe referring to a later time frame, for instance: Scott DeVeaux: ÒConversation with Howard McGhee,Ó The Black Perspective in Music, vol. 15. Spring 1987: ÒLater, when I was playing trumpet with Kirk, Fats Navarro was in the band, and I helped him get himself straight because he had chops trouble, too. So I took him to Charlie Allen, this mouthpiece maker I knew, and had him make (Fats) a mouthpiece. And about three weeks later, Fats was hitting high FÕs.

"Inside Stuff - Orchestras," Variety, January 27, 1943, 30: Barnet disbanded after closing an engagement on February 8 at Fort Wayne, IN. He was going to take a vacation of 4 weeks to recover from a generally rundown physical condition.

As this was the only occasion on which the Barnet band took a break during McGheeÕs stay in the band, September 1942_September 1943, it must be February 1943 that McGhee came back to Kirk and met Navarro for the first time.
